Genuine Temporary Entrant

Genuine Temporary Entrant is a person who satisfies the Genuine Temporary Entrant criterion for education institutions & the Australian Student Visa

The Australian Government operates a student visa program that enables people who are not Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents to undertake study in Australia. A person who wants to undertake a course of study under the student visa program must obtain a student visa before they can commence a course of study in Australia. In order to be made an offer of admissions into a course, and then to be subsequently granted a Student Visa, a successful applicant must independently satisfy both the education institution (that will be providing the course they want to study) and the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs (that will grant their student visa) that the applicant is both a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) and a genuine student (GS).

All applicants for a Student Visa need to demonstrate to their education institution and to the Department of Home Affairs that they are coming to Australia temporarily to gain a quality education. The purpose of the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria is to independently satisfy the education institution and the Department of Home Affairs that the applicant wants to move to Australia temporarily to pursue a quality education and that they  do not intend to misuse the student visa program for other intentions.  It is a useful integrity check to identify your genuine motives. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is an integrity measure to ensure that the student visa program is used as intended and not as a way for international students to maintain ongoing residency in Australia. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement applies to all student visa applicants.

When attempting to determine whether or not an applicant is  deemed to be a Genuine Student (GS) and a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE), the decision-makers of  the applicant’s  course and visa applications will be looking at their application in the context of the following 10 categories of Genuine Student (GS) and Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) assessment criteria:

1.    The applicant’s previous study
2.    Gaps in the applicant’s previous study
3.    The applicant’s current employment
4.    The applicant’s ties to their home country (or country of residence)
5.    The situation in the applicant’s home country (or country of residence)
6.    The applicant’s potential situation in Australia (living, financial, ties to Australia)
7.    The value of the course to the applicant’s future
8.    The applicant’s immigration history
9.    The applicant’s knowledge of the student visa conditions; and
10.    Other relevant matters
